FASTag OneTag: Change Your Bank Without Replacing the Tag on Rajmargyatra

Quick take: If you have a working NETC FASTag but want to move from one issuer bank to another, OneTag now lets eligible users port the FASTag through the official Rajmargyatra app without removing the physical sticker from the windshield. The existing FASTag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged; the issuer bank changes in the backend.

The service was launched by NHAI/IHMCL with NPCI in September 2026 and is now available through Rajmargyatra.

What OneTag actually changes

Earlier, changing your FASTag issuer generally meant:

Close old FASTag → complete fresh onboarding → obtain another physical FASTag → remove the old sticker.

OneTag changes that model.

Now:

Existing FASTag → verify → choose new issuer → complete onboarding → keep the same sticker.

The portability system is designed around the same principle as mobile-number portability: change the service provider without changing the underlying identifier.

What stays the same?

After successful portability:

  • Physical FASTag sticker: stays on the windshield
  • FASTag ID: remains unchanged
  • Vehicle registration number: remains linked
  • Issuer bank: changes
  • Wallet management: moves to the new issuer after onboarding

NHAI/PIB specifically confirms that the existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle remains unchanged after portability.

Before you start

Keep these ready:

☐ Rajmargyatra app

☐ Vehicle registration number

☐ Mobile number associated with your current FASTag

☐ Access to your current issuer bank's verification message/code

☐ KYC information required by the new issuer

Don't start the process while standing at a toll plaza.

Do it when the vehicle isn't about to enter a toll lane.

How to change your FASTag bank using OneTag

Step 1 — Open Rajmargyatra

Open the official Rajmargyatra app from NHAI.

The app currently includes FASTag services alongside the Annual Pass, Local Pass, highway information and the 1033 emergency helpline.

Make sure you're using the official app rather than an app or website promising “FASTag portability”.

Step 2 — Enter your vehicle registration number

Open the OneTag / FASTag portability service.

Enter your vehicle registration number as requested.

The system checks whether your FASTag is eligible for portability.

If the vehicle isn't eligible, don't repeatedly submit random details.

Read the reason displayed and resolve the underlying issue with the existing issuer if required.

Step 3 — Receive the Mobile Verification Code

If eligible, the process involves a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) from your current issuer bank.

Use the code only inside the official portability flow.

Never give the code to a caller claiming to be from NHAI or a bank.

The official process specifically uses this verification step to authorise the portability request.

Step 4 — Choose your new issuer bank

After authorisation, select the new FASTag issuer available through the OneTag flow.

The important distinction:

You're not ordering another sticker.

You're selecting the institution that will manage the existing FASTag after successful portability.

Step 5 — Complete KYC and wallet onboarding

The new issuer will take you through its customer verification and wallet-onboarding process.

Complete the information requested by that issuer.

Check your:

  • Name
  • Vehicle number
  • KYC details
  • Mobile number
  • Payment / wallet information

before confirming.

Step 6 — Portability completes

Once the new issuer completes onboarding, your existing FASTag remains physically attached to the vehicle.

Your FASTag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged, while the issuer relationship changes.

You don't need to peel off the sticker and stick on another one.

What happens to the old FASTag wallet?

This is an important detail.

OneTag does not simply move the old wallet balance into the new bank's wallet.

After successful portability, the previous issuer closes the existing FASTag wallet and refunds the available balance after applicable adjustments.

So don't assume:

“My ₹1,000 balance automatically becomes ₹1,000 in the new bank.”

Check the old issuer's closure/refund status.

Keep screenshots and transaction records until the old wallet is settled.

Can you immediately port it again?

No.

The official information specifies a six-month cooling period before an interoperable FASTag can be ported again.

So don't treat OneTag like something you can switch every few weeks to chase cashback offers.

Choose the new issuer carefully.

OneTag vs buying a new FASTag

SituationOneTagNew FASTagWant to change issuer bankYesNot necessaryRemove existing stickerNoUsually requiredExisting FASTag ID retainedYesNoVehicle number remains linkedYesFresh onboardingNew physical sticker requiredNoYesSix-month portability cooling periodYesNot applicable to buying a new tag

The central purpose of OneTag is precisely to avoid unnecessary physical replacement when the user simply wants to change issuer.

When would you actually want to use OneTag?

For example:

You have a FASTag issued by Bank A.

The tag works perfectly.

But you want to move your FASTag relationship to Bank B.

Previously, changing issuers could mean closing the existing tag and getting another physical tag.

With OneTag:

Bank A FASTag → OneTag portability → Bank B → same windshield sticker.

The RFID tag doesn't need to be physically replaced.

Don't confuse OneTag with “One Vehicle, One FASTag”

These are related to the broader FASTag ecosystem but solve different problems.

One Vehicle, One FASTag

NHAI's earlier initiative was designed to discourage multiple FASTags being issued or used for the same vehicle and required users to retain only the latest valid FASTag.

OneTag

OneTag is about portability between issuer banks while retaining the existing physical FASTag.

So:

One Vehicle, One FASTag = avoid multiple active tags

OneTag = change issuer without changing the physical tag

Common mistakes

❌ Buying another FASTag just because you want another bank

Check OneTag first if your existing tag is eligible.

❌ Removing a working sticker before starting portability

Don't peel it off unnecessarily.

❌ Sharing the six-digit MVC

Treat it like an authentication code.

❌ Assuming the old wallet transfers automatically

The old issuer handles closure and applicable refund.

❌ Trying to port again immediately

Remember the six-month cooling period.

❌ Using a random “FASTag portability” website

Start with the official Rajmargyatra app.

What if your FASTag is already blacklisted?

OneTag is a portability mechanism, not a shortcut around an inactive, blocked or otherwise ineligible FASTag.

First read the status shown in the official flow.

If the existing issuer needs to resolve KYC, vehicle details, balance or blacklist issues, fix that before assuming portability will bypass it.

Keep a small proof folder

After switching banks, save:

☐ OneTag portability confirmation

☐ Old issuer wallet closure/refund information

☐ New issuer onboarding confirmation

☐ Latest FASTag balance

☐ First few toll transactions after the switch

If something goes wrong later, these records are much more useful than trying to reconstruct the transaction history from SMS messages.

Don't remove the FASTag after porting

The whole point of OneTag is that the existing physical FASTag remains in place.

Keep it correctly affixed to the windshield.

Don't move it to another vehicle.

The FASTag remains associated with the vehicle registration details in the NETC system.

Rajmargyatra is more than OneTag

The official Rajmargyatra app currently provides several National Highway services, including:

  • FASTag services
  • FASTag Annual Pass
  • FASTag Local Pass
  • Toll-plaza information
  • Route planning
  • Complaint registration/tracking
  • 1033 National Highway emergency helpline

The app is published by National Highways Authority of India.

10-minute car-owner check

Open Rajmargyatra and check:

1. Is my FASTag active?

2. Is my vehicle number correct?

3. Is my current issuer giving me the service I need?

4. If I want another issuer, is OneTag available for my vehicle?

5. If I port, have I recorded the old wallet/refund details?

Five checks now can prevent a toll-plaza problem later.

Mini scenario

Rahul has a working FASTag from Bank A.

He wants Bank B to manage the FASTag instead.

He opens Rajmargyatra → enters the vehicle registration number → checks portability eligibility → receives the six-digit MVC from his current issuer → selects the new issuer → completes KYC and wallet onboarding.

The portability completes.

He does not remove the FASTag sticker.

The FASTag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged, while the new issuer takes over the FASTag relationship. The previous issuer handles closure and the applicable wallet refund.

How NetaSampark helps

FASTag portability is a national digital highway service, but the problem you face may still be at the issuer-bank or toll-plaza level.

Keep the portability confirmation, wallet transaction records and complaint/reference numbers together.

Use NetaSampark's explore guides for practical citizen-service navigation when a highway or service-delivery problem needs a documented escalation.

Be Informed. Be Heard.
