Passport Appointment 2026: How to Book a PSK/POPSK Slot, Choose Normal or Tatkaal and Prepare Your Documents

Quick take: Book your passport appointment only through the official Passport Seva portal, use the Document Advisor to determine the documents applicable to your case, choose Normal or Tatkaal based on your actual need and eligibility, complete the required online payment, and attend the PSK/POPSK with the required originals and self-attested photocopies. The Passport Seva portal currently also warns applicants about fraudulent websites and apps that collect personal data or charge additional fees. (Passport Seva)

This guide covers passport application and appointment booking. It does not cover DigiLocker's separate Police Verification Report (PVR) workflows.

Normal vs Tatkaal: What the Difference Actually Means

Normal and Tatkaal are different processing routes. Tatkaal isn't simply a service where you pay extra and automatically get a passport regardless of your documents.

The official Passport Seva portal tells applicants to check Tatkaal eligibility and the categories excluded from Tatkaal before applying. Additional documents may also be required depending on the applicant's circumstances. (Passport Seva)

Normal may make more sense when:

  • You don't have an urgent travel requirement.
  • Your documents are straightforward.
  • Your case involves a change or complication that needs careful documentation.
  • You don't want to deal with Tatkaal-specific requirements.

Tatkaal may make sense when:

  • You have a genuine time-sensitive requirement.
  • Your case is eligible for Tatkaal.
  • You have the required additional documents.
  • You're comfortable paying the additional Tatkaal fee applicable to your service.

Don't choose Tatkaal simply because someone says it is "faster for everyone."

If your documents don't satisfy the applicable requirements, paying the additional fee doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Step 1: Start on the Official Passport Seva Portal

Use:

Passport Seva — Official Government Portal

The Ministry of External Affairs currently warns about fake passport websites and mobile applications that collect applicant information or charge additional fees. It specifically advises citizens to use passportindia.gov.in or the official Passport Seva mobile app. (Passport Seva)

Don't trust a search result just because it says "Passport Seva"

Check the domain.

Official: passportindia.gov.in

A website offering:

"Guaranteed Tatkaal appointment — ₹2,999"

is not something you need.

Step 2: Register or Log In

If you're a new applicant, create your Passport Seva account.

You'll need to provide information such as:

  • Full name
  • Email ID
  • Login ID
  • Password
  • Passport Office

The current registration page also says applicants can apply at any PSK/RPO across India based on their preference, subject to the available service/location options. (Passport Seva)

Save your login details

Don't give your Passport Seva password to:

  • Travel agents
  • Cybercafés
  • "Passport consultants"
  • Unknown callers

If someone helps you fill the form, you should still retain control of the account.

Step 3: Choose Fresh Passport or Re-issue

Select the service that actually applies to you.

Fresh Passport

Generally for someone who doesn't already have a passport.

Re-issue

Used for an existing passport when a new passport is required for reasons such as:

  • Expiry
  • Expiring soon
  • Exhausted pages
  • Lost/damaged passport
  • Change in personal details
  • Other applicable circumstances

The portal's Document Advisor asks questions about your application category and circumstances before showing the relevant document requirements. (Passport Seva)

Step 4: Use the Document Advisor Before Paying

This is one of the most useful steps in the entire process.

The Passport Seva Document Advisor lets you identify the documents applicable to your particular case.

For example, the requirements can depend on:

  • Fresh vs re-issue
  • Adult vs minor
  • Normal vs Tatkaal
  • Address situation
  • Non-ECR eligibility
  • Government/PSU employment
  • Name change
  • Marriage/divorce circumstances
  • Other specific categories

The current Document Advisor explicitly asks these kinds of questions before generating the relevant document list. (Passport Seva)

Don't build your document list from a random YouTube video

Use the official Advisor for your exact category.

Step 5: Complete the Application

Fill in the application carefully.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Parents' details
  • Present address
  • Previous passport details, if applicable
  • Previous residential addresses where required
  • Employment information
  • Criminal/court information where applicable
  • Non-ECR information

Address deserves special attention

Passport Seva's current FAQ says that the address proof requirement is for the present address, while applicants must furnish the addresses where they have lived during the preceding year for police-verification purposes. (Passport India)

Don't invent an address history.

Use your actual residential history.

Step 6: Submit the Application and Get Your ARN

After submitting the application, you receive an:

Application Reference Number (ARN)

Treat this as an important tracking reference.

Save:

  • ARN
  • Login ID
  • Appointment information
  • Payment reference
  • Application PDF/receipt where available

You will use the application information to manage the appointment and track the application.

Step 7: Pay and Book the Appointment

Passport Seva requires online payment for appointment booking.

The official appointment instructions describe the sequence broadly as:

Application → Pay/Schedule Appointment → Select PSK → Payment → Appointment confirmation

Once payment succeeds, the appointment is booked according to the available slot. (Passport India)

The official portal currently also provides appointment availability information.

Check Passport Appointment Availability

Important: Tatkaal Payment

Tatkaal has a slightly different payment arrangement.

The Passport Seva payment instructions state that applicants applying under Tatkaal pay the Normal-category fee online initially, with the applicable additional Tatkaal fee payable in cash at the PSK/Passport Office after the Tatkaal application is accepted. (Passport India)

So don't assume:

"I paid the online amount, therefore the entire Tatkaal fee is finished."

Check the current fee information for your service before the appointment.

Passport Fees Changed From 1 July 2026

The current Passport Seva portal says that passport application fees were revised with effect from 1 July 2026. Applicants are specifically advised to check the revised fee before payment. (Passport Seva)

So avoid copying an old ₹ amount from an article or YouTube video.

Use the current official fee calculator/portal.

If Your Bank Account Is Debited but the Appointment Isn't Showing

This is where people often make an expensive mistake.

Don't immediately pay again.

First:

1. Save the bank transaction/reference number.

2. Check Passport Seva payment/application status.

3. Check whether the appointment was actually generated.

4. Check the ARN.

5. Follow the portal's payment-resolution instructions.

The official Passport Seva instructions specifically address payment failures and advise against creating unnecessary duplicate transactions. (Passport India)

What to Carry on Appointment Day

Create one physical folder.

Carry:

☐ Appointment/ARN receipt

☐ All required original documents

☐ One set of self-attested photocopies where required

☐ Existing passport, if re-issuing

☐ Additional Tatkaal documents, if applicable

☐ Relevant annexure/undertaking, if your category requires it

The official Passport Seva advisory instructs applicants to bring the required original documents along with one set of self-attested photocopies. It also states that a photograph is not required for the normal PSK process described in that advisory. (Passport India)

Still follow the instructions on your appointment receipt and the current Document Advisor.

DigiLocker: Useful, But Don't Assume Originals Are Irrelevant

Where Passport Seva accepts DigiLocker-issued documents for the applicable process, use the issuer-provided digital document, not a blurry photograph of the original.

For example:

DigiLocker → Issued Documents → relevant document

is different from:

DigiLocker → Uploaded Documents → photograph you uploaded yourself

If the appointment instructions tell you to bring originals, bring them.

Digital access can simplify document submission; it doesn't mean every appointment requirement disappears.

Tatkaal Documents Need Extra Attention

The official Passport Seva portal says Tatkaal applicants must check the applicable eligibility criteria and categories that are not eligible for Tatkaal. It also requires a Tatkaal undertaking in applicable cases. (Passport Seva)

Depending on the case, applicants may need additional documents relating to:

  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Non-ECR
  • Other eligibility requirements

Don't rely on a generic "10 documents for Tatkaal" list from social media.

Use:

Passport Seva → Tatkaal → Document Advisor

for your exact situation.

What Happens at the PSK?

Your appointment generally involves document processing and verification at the Passport Seva facility.

Follow the instructions given by the staff and keep your documents organised.

Don't hand over original documents to an unknown person outside the official counter.

A useful habit

Keep your documents in the same order as your checklist.

That makes it much easier to respond when a counter asks for a particular proof.

After the PSK Visit

The application can move through:

Application processing → police verification where applicable → passport printing/dispatch

The exact sequence depends on the case.

The Passport Seva FAQ explains that police verification can be pre-issue or post-issue, depending on the application and circumstances. For eligible Tatkaal applications, passport issuance can occur on a post-police-verification basis. (Passport India)

So:

Tatkaal does not mean "no police verification."

It can mean that police verification occurs after passport issuance in eligible cases.

How to Track Your Application

Use the official Passport Seva portal's:

Track Passport Application

facility.

Passport Seva — Track Application

Keep your application reference information available.

Don't rely only on SMS messages forwarded by an agent.

Rescheduling: Don't Waste Your Appointment

Passport Seva's current advisory says a confirmed appointment can be rescheduled/cancelled only twice within a year of the first appointment date. It also states that online payment remains valid for one year from the first appointment date, subject to the conditions in the portal's instructions. (Passport India)

So if you know you can't attend:

Reschedule early through the official portal.

Don't simply miss the appointment and assume everything will remain unchanged.

If You Change Cities

The current Passport Seva registration page says applicants can apply at PSK/RPO locations across India based on their preference. (Passport Seva)

But if you've already generated an ARN and booked an appointment, don't casually abandon the application and start a second one.

First check the portal's current instructions for:

  • Changing PSK/RPO
  • Rescheduling
  • Existing ARN
  • Payment validity

If you're unsure, contact Passport Seva rather than creating duplicate applications.

Minors: Don't Guess the Parent/Consent Requirements

Passport applications for minors have their own documentation and consent rules.

The Passport Seva FAQ explains that the police-verification position for minors can depend on factors including the parents' passport status and the consent documentation available. (Passport India)

So don't rely on:

"A child always needs both parents."

or:

"A child never needs police verification."

Before the appointment

Check:

Minor → Fresh/Reissue → Normal/Tatkaal → Document Advisor

and follow the exact instructions for the child's case.

Common Passport Booking Mistakes

❌ Using a private "Passport Seva" website

Use the official government portal.

❌ Choosing Tatkaal without checking eligibility

Extra payment doesn't fix missing eligibility documents.

❌ Using an old document list

Run the current Document Advisor.

❌ Paying twice after a failed transaction

Check payment status first.

❌ Arriving without originals

Bring the required originals and photocopies.

❌ Assuming DigiLocker eliminates all physical documents

Follow your appointment instructions.

❌ Giving your login credentials to an agent

Keep control of your account.

❌ Waiting until the appointment morning to discover a missing annexure

Prepare the folder beforehand.

Your Appointment-Day Pouch

Keep everything in one folder:

Front pocket

  • Appointment receipt
  • ARN
  • Passport, if re-issue

Middle

  • Original documents

Back

  • Self-attested photocopies

Phone

  • Passport Seva login
  • DigiLocker, if applicable
  • Payment reference
  • Appointment details

And carry the originals specified by the current Document Advisor.

A Simple 20-Minute Passport Check Before You Pay

Minute 1–5

Open the official Passport Seva portal.

Minute 5–8

Select your exact application type.

Minute 8–12

Run the Document Advisor.

Minute 12–15

Compare the requirements with the documents actually in your possession.

Minute 15–18

Check Normal vs Tatkaal eligibility and current fee.

Minute 18–20

Only then proceed with payment/appointment booking.

That five-minute document check can save a much longer trip to the PSK.

The Golden Rule

Don't book the appointment first and investigate the documents later.

Use this order:

Official portal

Correct application category

Document Advisor

Normal/Tatkaal eligibility

Application

Payment

Appointment

Originals + copies at PSK/POPSK

That sequence is much safer than relying on an agent's checklist.

Official Passport Seva

Passport Seva — Ministry of External Affairs

The official portal currently lists Fresh/Re-issue Passport, Tatkaal Passport, appointment availability, application tracking, Document Advisor and grievance services. It also lists the National Call Centre at 1800-258-1800. (Passport Seva)

Be Informed. Be Heard.

Current information checked against Passport Seva/Ministry of External Affairs pages and appointment/payment advisories. Passport fees, appointment availability and document requirements can change; use the current Document Advisor and instructions attached to your ARN before attending the appointment.
