MP or MLA: who do I go to?

People often mix these up. Here's a simple way to think about it:

• Your MP works on central matters: national highways, railways, central schemes like PM-KISAN or PMAY, passports, post offices, central government offices and the MPLADS fund for local works.

• Your MLA handles state matters: state roads, ration cards, TNPDS, state hospitals, schools, police stations and state schemes.

If your problem is a ration card, go to your MLA or use the state systems. Our guide on the Tamil Nadu smart ration card covers the steps. For state department complaints, the CM Helpline 1100 is often faster.

How do I contact my MP?

1. Find your constituency. Check your voter ID or search your area on NetaSampark's Tamil Nadu page.

2. Open the MP's profile from the table above.

3. Get contact details from sansad.in, which lists official addresses, phone numbers and email.

4. Write a clear request. Mention your name, address, constituency, the problem and what you've already tried. Attach copies of any complaint numbers.

5. Follow up after two or three weeks if you hear nothing.

You can also ask your MP to recommend a local work under MPLADS, like a bus shelter, a borewell or a classroom. Each MP gets ₹5 crore a year for this.

Rate your MP

Every MP on NetaSampark has a Rate Your Neta page with 10 parameters, like accessibility and work done in the constituency. Your rating counts, and it helps others in your area see how their MP is doing.

What can you ask your MP for?

Here are some things people commonly take to their MP's office:

• A recommendation letter for a central scheme or a hospital admission at AIIMS or a central hospital

• Help with a stuck passport, railway or postal service issue

• A local work under MPLADS, like a community hall, streetlights or a school toilet

• Raising a local issue in Parliament, like a pending railway line or highway repair

Keep your request short and specific. A one-page letter with documents attached usually gets a faster response than a long one.
