Quick take: On Gandhi Jayanti, Friday 2 October 2026, special Gram Sabhas are being held across the country. They kick off the People's Plan Campaign 2026-27, "Sabki Yojana, Sabka Vikas", which is where your gram panchayat decides what goes into next year's development plan. If you want a road, a drain, a handpump or a fix for the anganwadi in that plan, this is the meeting to turn up to.
What is a Gram Sabha, really?
The Gram Sabha is every adult voter in your village, all of you together. It's not the sarpanch's meeting and it's not the ward members' meeting. Legally it's the body the panchayat is answerable to. Most states require Gram Sabhas a few times a year, and 2 October is one of the traditional dates.
What's special about this year's 2 October meeting?
According to the Ministry, the special Gram Sabhas will:
More than 2.55 lakh gram panchayats upload their plans on eGramSwaraj. What's said in the room on 2 October is supposed to shape what gets uploaded.
Before you go: a 15-minute prep list
At the meeting: how to actually be heard
Questions worth asking (copy these)
After the meeting: follow-up that works
If nothing moves, you can file an RTI asking for the action taken on the Gram Sabha resolution. Be specific: date, item and resolution number.
Living in a town or city?
Urban areas don't have Gram Sabhas, but many states have ward committees or area sabhas. The same habits work there: show up, get it minuted, follow up with your councillor.
Why this matters
Most of what makes village life easier or harder, like water, roads, drains and street lighting, is decided at the panchayat level, and plans are drawn up once a year. Missing 2 October means waiting another year for your issue to even get on the list.
Quick answers
Can women and young voters speak? Yes. Every adult on the village voter list is a member of the Gram Sabha. Many states also hold separate Mahila Sabhas, so ask about yours.
What if the meeting gets postponed? Ask for the new date in writing, or check the panchayat noticeboard.
Know who to follow up with. Find your MLA, MP and local representatives on NetaSampark so your Gram Sabha ask doesn't stop at the panchayat office.
