What is the PM YASASVI Top Class School scholarship?

PM YASASVI is the Centre's umbrella scholarship scheme for OBC, EBC (economically backward classes) and DNT (denotified, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes) students. The Top Class School part pays for bright students from poor families to study at good schools that the ministry has identified as "top class". The money covers full tuition fees, hostel charges and other school costs, up to a ceiling.

The window for 2026-27 opened on NSP on 22 October 2026. That leaves less than two weeks. Many parents don't know their child's school is on the list at all, which is why seats go unused every year.

Who is eligible?

Your child can apply if all of these are true:

• Category: OBC, EBC or DNT

• Class: Studying in classes 9 to 12 in a school notified as a top class school under the scheme

• Income: Total family income from all sources below ₹2.5 lakh a year

• Girls: 30% of the scholarships are reserved for girl students

• Not taking another central scholarship for the same purpose at the same time

Check with the school first. The school must be on the list for this scheme and must verify your application on NSP. If the school doesn't know, ask them to check with the scheme's nodal office.

How do I find out if my child's school is on the top class list?

This is the step most families skip. Try these, in order:

• Ask the school office or principal directly. Schools on the list usually have an institute nodal officer registered on NSP, because they have to verify applications

• Search on NSP. While filling the form, if your school doesn't appear in the dropdown for this scheme, it's probably not on the list for 2026-27

• Check the scheme page on the Department of Social Justice website for guidelines and notices

• Ask the district social welfare or backward classes welfare office. They handle district-level verification and can tell you which schools are covered

If the school isn't on the list, your child can't use this scheme, but check the state's own pre-matric scholarships for OBC and DNT students on NSP or the state portal.

How much money does the student get?

ClassMaximum per year
Classes 9 and 10₹75,000
Classes 11 and 12₹1,25,000

This covers school fees, hostel fees and related charges as per actuals, up to the cap. The money comes by DBT into the student's Aadhaar-seeded bank account.

How do I apply on NSP, step by step?

1. Do One Time Registration (OTR) on scholarships.gov.in if you haven't. It now uses face authentication through the app. Our OTR guide covers it.

2. Log in with your OTR number and password.

3. Open the application form and pick the scheme under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment: PM YASASVI Top Class School Education for OBC, EBC and DNT students.

4. Fill academic details: current class, school, and previous year marks.

5. Fill income and category details exactly as on your certificates.

6. Add bank details. Aadhaar-seeded bank account in the student's name is best.

7. Upload documents in the size asked.

8. Final submit before 15 November 2026 and download the application PDF.

9. Ask your school to verify it by 30 November 2026. If the school doesn't verify, the application doesn't move.

What happens after I apply?

The school (institute) verifies first. Then the district and state nodal officers verify by 15 December 2026. After that, the ministry shortlists and money is released by DBT. Track status by logging in to NSP. If your application shows "defective", fix and resubmit before 30 November 2026.

What if my state is different?

The NSP notice says applications from Rajasthan, Kerala and Karnataka for some schemes will open later. If you're in these states and can't find the form, check the NSP notice board and your school, don't assume you've missed it.

Common mistakes that get applications rejected

• Name spelled differently on Aadhaar, marksheet and bank account

• Income certificate older than allowed or not from a competent authority

• Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so DBT fails

• School not verifying in time

• Choosing the wrong scheme. The YASASVI post-matric scheme for college students is a different scheme with a 30 November 2026 date

Also note that NMMS (National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship) on NSP closes the same day, 15 November 2026. If your child qualified in NMMS, do that application too. See our NMMSS guide.

Real-life examples

A Class 11 boy from a DNT community in Maharashtra. He uses his caste certificate and income certificate, applies on NSP, and follows up with the school office to verify before the end of November.

A family that almost missed it. Imran's parents thought the scholarship was only for college. His school teacher told them in the last week. They apply on 14 November 2026 and save the PDF.
