What is NMMSS?
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a Central Sector scholarship implemented by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education.
The scheme is designed to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and encourage them to continue their education after Class VIII through the secondary and higher-secondary stages.
The scholarship amount is ₹12,000 per year, and fresh scholarships are awarded to selected students entering Class IX. The scholarship can subsequently continue through renewal up to Class XII, subject to the applicable conditions. DSEL Education

|---|---|
| NSP student application opens | 1 June 2026 |
| Student application deadline | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application verification | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification | 15 November 2026 |
| DNO/SNO/MNO verification | 30 November 2026 |
These dates are the current dates displayed on the NSP's 2026–27 scholarship listing. Scholarships
Don't confuse the student deadline with the verification deadline
31 October is the deadline for the student to submit the application.
Students should not assume they can submit after this date because institute or district verification continues until November.
The application must first be submitted by the student and then pass the required verification stages. The Ministry has previously described NMMSS as having school/institute-level and district-level verification before applications proceed for sanction and disbursement. DSEL Education
How much scholarship does NMMSS provide?
NMMSS provides:
₹12,000 per student per year
The amount is paid through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The Ministry has stated that NMMSS scholarship payments are transferred electronically through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). DSEL Education
Who can get NMMSS?
There are two broad groups of students using NSP for NMMSS:
Fresh applicants
Fresh NMMSS scholarships are awarded to students entering Class IX after qualifying in the NMMSS selection process conducted by their respective State/UT.
The selection process includes the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). DSEL Education
Renewal applicants
Students who have already been selected for NMMSS can continue receiving the scholarship through renewal applications in Classes X, XI and XII, provided they meet the continuation requirements.
The Ministry has specifically stated that Class X, XI and XII students apply through the renewal route on NSP. DSEL Education
Income limit for NMMSS
The published NMMSS guidelines specify that the parental income from all sources should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per year at the time of selection. DSEL Education
Students should check the requirements displayed in their NSP application because scheme instructions and portal procedures can be updated.
Which schools are covered?
NMMSS is intended for students studying as regular students in:
- State Government schools
- Government-aided schools
- Local-body schools
The published scheme guidelines exclude students studying in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) and certain government residential schools where boarding, lodging and education are provided. DSEL Education
What are the academic requirements?
For fresh selection, the published guidelines require a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VII, with a 5-percentage-point relaxation for SC/ST students, for appearing in the State/UT selection test. DSEL Education
For continuation, the scheme requires academic performance and promotion conditions. The published guidelines specify:
- 60% marks in Class X for continuation into the higher-secondary stage, with a 5-percentage-point relaxation for SC/ST students.
- Clear promotion from Class IX to X and from Class XI to XII in the first attempt for continuation at those stages. Education Government of India
How to apply or renew NMMSS on NSP
Step 1: Complete your OTR
NSP requires a One Time Registration (OTR) number for scholarship applications.
The portal says OTR has been mandatory for scholarship applications since 2024–25. Scholarships
If you do not already have an OTR, complete the registration process before attempting the scholarship application.
Step 2: Log in to NSP
Open the official National Scholarship Portal and enter the student section.
Use your OTR and login credentials to access the application.
Step 3: Select NMMSS
Find:
National Means Cum Merit Scholarship (Merit Based Scheme)
under the Department of School Education & Literacy.
The scheme is currently listed on NSP for academic year 2026–27 with a student application deadline of 31 October 2026. Scholarships
Step 4: Choose the appropriate application route
If you are a newly selected NMMSS student entering Class IX, complete the applicable fresh application.
If you are already receiving NMMSS and are continuing in Classes X–XII, use the renewal application.
Do not submit a fresh application simply because you are renewing an existing scholarship.
Step 5: Check your details
Review:
- Student name
- Date of birth
- School details
- Class
- Academic information
- Category
- Parent/guardian information
- Income details where applicable
- Bank details
- Aadhaar/OTR information
Correct any discrepancy before final submission.
Step 6: Keep documents ready
Depending on the application and verification requirements, keep relevant documents available, such as:
- Previous academic marksheet
- Income certificate or income-related documents where required
- Category certificate where applicable
- Aadhaar details
- Bank account information
- School/selection-related documents
- Any document specifically requested by NSP or the verifying authority
The exact documents required can vary according to the application stage and applicable instructions.
Step 7: Submit before 31 October
Do not leave final submission until the last few hours.
After submitting:
- Save the application/reference number.
- Download or print the submitted application if available.
- Check the application status.
- Confirm that your school/institute has completed verification.
What happens after submission?
NMMSS applications go through verification before scholarship disbursement.
For 2026–27, the NSP listing currently shows:
Student submission → Defective/institute verification → DNO/SNO/MNO verification → Processing and disbursement
The current portal dates place the student deadline on 31 October, institute/defective verification on 15 November, and higher-level verification on 30 November 2026. Scholarships
So, submitting the form is only the first part of the process.
What if your application is marked defective?
A defective application should not be ignored.
Log in to NSP and check the reason for the defect. If correction is permitted, make the required changes and resubmit within the applicable period.
Also contact your school's scholarship or NSP nodal officer if the issue relates to school verification.
Check your bank account before applying
NMMSS payments are made through DBT. The Ministry has also highlighted Aadhaar seeding of beneficiary bank accounts as part of the payment process. DSEL Education
Before submitting, check that:
- Your bank account is active.
- The account details entered on NSP are correct.
- The beneficiary's banking/Aadhaar details are properly linked where required.
- There is no mismatch in the student's name or bank information.
A bank-detail error can create problems even after an application has successfully passed verification.
What if you have already received NMMSS?
If you are an existing NMMSS awardee, do not assume the scholarship will automatically continue.
Students in Classes X–XII are required to apply through the renewal process on NSP, subject to the applicable academic and other continuation conditions. DSEL Education
Check your NSP account and complete the renewal before the 31 October 2026 student deadline.
