Karnataka has paused regular new ration card applications. As of 31 October 2026, the Ahara portal accepts new applications only under three special categories: e-Shram workers, PVTG tribal families and medical emergency cases, open till 31 March 2027. You can still check status, see family members and download your e-ration card online.

Can I apply for a new ration card in Karnataka right now?

Here's the honest answer. The Ahara portal clearly says applications for new ration cards are suspended temporarily. That's been the position for a while, mainly because the state has been cleaning up its card database and doing e-KYC.

But there are three exceptions open right now:

Special categoryWho it's forWindowTiming on portal
e-ShramUnorganised workers registered on e-Shram8 May 2026 to 31 March 202710:00 AM to 3:00 PM
PVTGParticularly Vulnerable Tribal Group families8 May 2026 to 31 March 202710:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Medical emergencyFamilies needing a card for urgent treatment8 May 2026 to 31 March 202710:00 AM to 5:00 PM

So if you're a daily-wage worker, domestic worker, construction worker or delivery partner, get your e-Shram card first, then apply under the e-Shram category. If someone in the family needs urgent treatment and you need a BPL card, the medical emergency option is meant for you.

Which type of card will I get: AAY, PHH or NPHH?

Karnataka issues three kinds of ration cards, and which one you get decides what you receive:

CardAlso calledWho usually gets itWhat it means
AAYAntyodaya Anna YojanaPoorest families, destitute householdsHighest free grain quota per family
PHHPriority Household, often called BPLLow-income families meeting state criteriaFree rice per person under NFSA and the state's Anna Bhagya scheme
NPHHNon-Priority Household, often called APLFamilies above the income limitMainly used as ID and address proof; little or no subsidised grain

The type isn't your choice. Officials decide it after checking income, land, vehicle ownership and whether anyone in the family pays income tax or holds a government job. A BPL card also matters for other benefits, like Gruha Lakshmi and some health schemes, so families care a lot about getting the right category.

How do I apply under a special category, step by step?

1. Open ahara.karnataka.gov.in and go to e-Services.

2. Under the ration card section, choose New Ration Card and pick the special category that fits, like e-Shram, PVTG or medical emergency.

3. Pick your language (Kannada or English) and enter the Aadhaar number of the head of family. The head of family is usually the eldest woman of the household.

4. Verify with OTP or biometric authentication.

5. Add each family member with their Aadhaar. Every member has to be verified.

6. Upload documents as asked: e-Shram card, hospital papers for medical emergency, or caste and tribe certificate for PVTG.

7. Submit and note the acknowledgement number. You'll need it to track your application.

The portal often gets busy in the morning. If it's slow, try later in the day, or visit a Grama One centre in villages or a Karnataka One or Bangalore One centre in cities.

How do I check my ration card application status?

1. Go to ahara.karnataka.gov.in and open e-Services.

2. Click e-Status and then New / Existing RC Request Status.

3. Choose your district zone, as the portal splits Karnataka into Bengaluru, Mysuru and Kalaburagi divisions.

4. Enter your acknowledgement number or ration card number.

5. Verify with OTP and check the status: pending, approved or rejected.

If it's stuck as pending for weeks, visit your taluk food office or the Food Inspector with your acknowledgement slip.

How do I see my family's names and download the e-ration card?

1. On the Ahara portal, open e-Ration Card, then Show Village List or Ration Card Details.

2. Select district, taluk and village, or search by ration card number.

3. Check every family member's name. If someone's missing, that member needs to be added through a change request.

4. To download the card, use the e-Ration Card option, enter your card number and verify with OTP. Save the PDF.

How do I add a new member, like a newborn or a new bride?

Adding members works through the Amendment / Change Request option on the portal. You'll need the new member's Aadhaar, and for a child, the birth certificate. For a new bride, the old card from her parents' home may need her name removed first. This option is sometimes paused along with new cards, so check the portal or your taluk food office before you go.

Is e-KYC still needed?

Yes. Every member on the card has to complete e-KYC at the ration shop with a fingerprint. Members who skip it can be dropped from the card. We covered the deadline earlier: Karnataka ration card e-KYC. If you've moved from another state, you can also use your existing card through One Nation One Ration Card.

Real-life examples

Example 1, a construction worker in Kalaburagi. Basavaraj has no ration card. He registers on e-Shram at a CSC, then applies on Ahara under the e-Shram category on 4 November 2026 between 10 AM and 3 PM.

Example 2, a family in Mysuru with a cancer patient. The Gowdas need a BPL card for treatment benefits. They apply under the medical emergency category with hospital papers.

Example 3, a newborn in Bengaluru. Lakshmi wants to add her baby. She gets the birth certificate and Aadhaar first, then files a change request on Ahara.

Final reminder

Don't pay agents who promise a "direct BPL card". Regular new applications are closed, and the only open routes are the three special categories till 31 March 2027. If your village's ration shop isn't working properly, raise it with your MLA. Look them up on NetaSampark's Karnataka page.
