EPFO launched automatic settlement on 1 November 2026: it will now settle Aadhaar-verified inoperative PF accounts with balances up to ₹1,000, without you filing a claim. What did EPFO announce on 1 November 2026?
At its 74th Foundation Day, EPFO launched automatic settlement of eligible inoperative EPF accounts. As per the official PIB release:
• Subscribers with Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts holding up to ₹1,000 won't have to file individual claims
• EPFO will start the settlement itself, after its identity and bank-account checks
• Around one lakh accounts with about ₹5 crore are expected to benefit
Small amounts, yes. But these are exactly the accounts nobody bothers to claim. A ₹700 balance from a 2009 summer job isn't worth a trip to an EPFO office. Now it will come to you on its own, if your Aadhaar and bank are in order.
What is an inoperative PF account, in simple words?
Under EPFO rules, an account generally becomes "inoperative" when the money sits there unclaimed long after it should have been taken out. The common cases:
• The member retired after 55 and didn't claim within three years
• The member left India permanently and didn't claim
• The member died and the family never claimed
Inoperative accounts don't earn interest after a point, so leaving money there is a loss. Accounts of members who simply changed jobs and are still under 58 usually keep earning interest, but it's still smart to transfer them into your current UAN.
How will the automatic settlement work?
EPFO hasn't asked members to apply. Based on the release, here's what happens:
1. EPFO identifies inoperative accounts with ₹1,000 or less
2. It checks that the account is linked to a verified Aadhaar
3. It verifies the bank account details on record
4. It pays the money into that bank account
So the two things that decide whether you get it automatically are a verified Aadhaar and a correct, active bank account. If either is missing, your account may be skipped.
How do I claim an old PF account with more than ₹1,000?
If you have a UAN with Aadhaar and bank seeded, claim online:
1. Log in to the Member e-Sewa portal with your UAN and password.
2. Check KYC under Manage, then KYC. Aadhaar, bank and PAN should show as approved.
3. Go to Online Services, then Claim (Form 31, 19, 10C and 10D).
4. Verify your bank account by entering the last digits when asked.
5. Select the old member ID and the claim type. For final settlement, it's Form 19 for PF and Form 10C for pension, as eligible.
6. Submit with Aadhaar OTP.
7. Track the status under Track Claim Status.
Our Form 19 and Form 10C checklist explains each field.
If you're still working, don't withdraw. Transfer the old account to your current UAN instead using One Member One EPF Account (transfer request). Your service period stays continuous, which matters for pension and for avoiding TDS.
What if I don't have a UAN or the old account isn't linked?
This is common for accounts from before 2014, when UAN didn't exist. Try these steps:
• Find the old PF number. It's on old salary slips or the PF slip your employer gave. It looks like a region code, office code, establishment code and account number together
• Generate or link UAN. On the member portal, check if a UAN exists for your Aadhaar. Your current employer can also help link the old member ID
• If the old company has shut down, EPFO accepts claims for inoperative accounts with attestation by other authorities in such cases. Ask at your nearest EPFO regional office or call 14470 for the attestation they'll accept
• File a grievance on EPFiGMS if the account can't be traced. Our EPFiGMS guide shows how
What about a family member who died with PF money?
The nominee or legal heirs can claim. This usually needs Form 20 for PF, Form 10D for family pension where eligible, and Form 5(IF) for EDLI insurance. Keep the death certificate, nomination details and bank details of the claimant ready. EPFO offices have help desks for death claims. Don't let this slide, because the EDLI insurance part can be a big amount.
What if the money doesn't come?
Auto-settlement didn't happen. Your account may be above ₹1,000, not Aadhaar-verified or with an old bank account. Update KYC on the member portal, then wait or file a manual claim.
Claim rejected. Read the rejection reason under Track Claim Status. Most rejections are about bank mismatch, name mismatch with Aadhaar, or a missing cheque leaf image. Fix and refile.
Stuck for weeks. EPFO says average claim settlement time dropped to 2.57 days in October 2026, so a long delay usually means a KYC or employer issue. File on EPFiGMS with your claim ID.
How do I avoid PF scams?
Fake "PF recovery agents" call people promising to unlock old PF for a fee. Remember:
• EPFO doesn't charge anything for settlement
• EPFO never asks for your bank PIN, OTP over a call, or UPI PIN
• Don't share your UAN password with anyone

Real-life examples
A former call-centre worker in Gurugram. Sameer worked six months in 2011. That account had ₹940. His Aadhaar is linked to his UAN and his bank account is current, so it gets settled automatically.
A retired mill worker in Coimbatore. Murugan retired in 2018 and never claimed ₹62,000 from an old employer. He links his old member ID, updates his bank, and files Form 19 online with his son's help.
A widow in Bhopal. Her husband's PF from a shut company lies unclaimed. She visits the EPFO regional office, learns which attestation is accepted, and files the death claim with the certificate and bank details.
Documents checklist
☐ UAN and password, or old PF account number
☐ Aadhaar linked and verified with UAN
☐ Active bank account with correct IFSC, seeded in KYC
☐ PAN, if required for your claim
☐ Cancelled cheque or passbook copy
☐ Death certificate and nomination details (for family claims)
Final reminder
Spend ten minutes checking every PF account you've ever had. Make sure Aadhaar and your current bank are seeded, so small balances settle on their own and bigger ones can be claimed online. If you want your MP to raise PF delays, reach them through NetaSampark's Know Your Neta.

No. But your Aadhaar must be verified and your bank account details correct.
How many accounts will benefit?
About one lakh accounts holding around ₹5 crore, as per EPFO.
