What exactly did the Election Commission change on 29 October 2026?

On 29 October 2026 the Election Commission of India (ECI) wrote separate letters to the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of six states and UTs. Two things happened.

First, Delhi's claims and objections window, which was supposed to close on 30 October 2026, now runs till 25 November 2026. This came a day after the Supreme Court, on 28 October 2026, asked the Commission to think about giving more time.

Second, and this is the bigger news for lakhs of people, the window has been reopened in five states where it had already shut. According to the CEO websites, it had closed in Haryana on 30 September 2026, Telangana on 7 October 2026, Nagaland on 20 October 2026, Andhra Pradesh on 22 October 2026 and Maharashtra on 26 October 2026.

So if you missed the earlier deadline and thought your chance was gone, it's not. You get one more shot before the final list is printed.

What are the new SIR dates, state by state?

Here's the revised calendar as reported by the Indian Express and Mint on 30 October 2026. The ECI letters go to the state CEOs, so always cross-check your state's own notice before you rely on a date.

State / UTWindow had closed onNew claims and objections deadlineNotices and disposal tillFinal roll
Maharashtra26 October 202613 November 202625 November 202630 November 2026
Andhra Pradesh22 October 202620 November 2026as per CEO notice30 November 2026
Haryana30 September 202620 November 2026as per CEO notice30 November 2026
Nagaland20 October 202625 November 2026as per CEO notice30 November 2026

One small catch: Mint describes the 20, 25 and 26 November 2026 dates for AP, Haryana, Nagaland and Telangana as the end of the "notice and disposal" stage, while the Indian Express calls them the new claims deadlines. Don't wait for the last date in any case. File as early as you can, ideally before 10 November 2026, so the ERO has time to process it before the final roll.

Who should file a form now?

You should act if any of these is true for you or someone at home:

Your name was in the old voter list but is missing from the SIR draft roll.

You never submitted the enumeration form during the BLO visit, so you were left out of the draft.

You turned 18 recently, or will be 18 on the qualifying date, and you're not enrolled at all.

You moved to a new house or a new constituency and your entry still shows the old address.

Your name, photo, age or relation name is wrong in the draft roll.

You know of a dead or duplicate entry in your part of the roll that should go.

If your name is already in the draft roll with correct details, you don't need to do anything. Just check it once more before the final list.

Which form do I need: Form 6, Form 7 or Form 8?

Picking the right form saves you weeks. Here's a simple rule of thumb:

Your situationForm
Name missing from draft roll, or new voterForm 6 (new enrolment / inclusion)
Want to object to someone's inclusion, or delete a dead or duplicate nameForm 7 (objection / deletion)
Shifted house, or need to correct name, photo, age or other detailsForm 8 (shifting / correction)

In Delhi, the Supreme Court hearing on 28 October 2026 made one more point clear. People marked as shifted or untraceable can use Form 8 to update their address instead of filing a fresh Form 6, as we explained in our Delhi SIR post.

How do I file Form 6 online, step by step?

1. Open the portal. Go to voters.eci.gov.in or open the Voter Helpline app.

2. Log in. Sign up with your mobile number and OTP if it's your first time.

3. Pick the form. Choose "New registration for general electors (Form 6)".

4. Select state, district and assembly constituency. Use your current address, not the old one.

5. Fill personal details. Name as in your documents, date of birth, relative's name and gender.

6. Add address. House number, street, locality, post office and PIN code. Small spelling errors here cause most rejections, so go slow.

7. Upload documents. A recent photo with a plain background, age proof and address proof. Keep files small and clear.

8. Fill the declaration. Some states ask for the SIR-specific declaration about your earlier enrolment. Answer honestly.

9. Submit and save the reference number. You'll get it on screen and by SMS. Screenshot it.

If you prefer paper, you can give the filled form to your BLO or at the ERO office. Ask for a signed acknowledgement.

How do I check if my claim went through?

On voters.eci.gov.in, use "Track application status" with your reference number. Status usually moves from submitted, to BLO field verification, to hearing (if needed), to accepted or rejected. Our tracking guide explains each stage.

If it shows "rejected", the reason is listed. Common ones are mismatched address proof, a blurry photo, or the BLO not finding you at home. You can file again with better documents while the window is still open.

What if I get a notice or a hearing date?

Don't panic. A notice just means the ERO needs to check something. Go on the given date with originals of the documents you uploaded. If you can't go, ask the ERO office whether the BLO can collect documents at your door, which several states allowed during SIR. Keep a photocopy of everything you hand over.

What happens after the final roll on 30 November 2026?

Once the final roll is out on 30 November 2026 (22 December 2026 in Delhi), SIR ends for that state. After that, you can still apply through continuous updation using the same Form 6, 7 or 8, but your name may not make it in time for an upcoming election. That's why this window matters.

Real-life examples

Example 1, Pune. Ravi was away for work during the BLO visits and his name vanished from the draft roll. The Maharashtra window closed on 26 October 2026 and he thought it was over. Now he can file Form 6 online before 13 November 2026.

Example 2, Hyderabad. Shabana's family shifted from Secunderabad to Kukatpally. Her entry is still at the old address. She should file Form 8 for shifting before 26 November 2026.

Example 3, Delhi. An elderly couple was marked "shifted" though they never moved. They can use Form 8 to correct it, with the extra time till 25 November 2026.

Final reminder

Don't sit on this. Check the draft roll on your state CEO website now, and if your name is missing or wrong, file the right form well before the deadline. Help your parents and neighbours too, older voters lose out the most in SIR. After you're on the list, look up who represents you on NetaSampark's Know Your Neta and rate their work.
