Booking Diwali and Chhath Trains in 2026? Aadhaar-Verify Your IRCTC Account First — Tatkal Timings and Festival Specials
Diwali and Chhath are among the busiest railway travel periods of the year, and 2026 is no exception.
For passengers planning to travel home this festive season, there are two different booking strategies:
- Book a regular reserved train as soon as your journey enters the reservation window, or
- Use Tatkal if regular berths are unavailable, remembering that Aadhaar authentication is now a prerequisite for Tatkal and Premium Tatkal bookings through IRCTC.
Indian Railways reduced the normal Advance Reservation Period (ARP) from 120 days to 60 days, excluding the date of journey, from 1 November 2024. That 60-day system remains the current framework. Press Information Bureau
With Diwali falling on 8 November 2026 and the main Chhath Puja falling on 15 November 2026, passengers should start planning their return journeys as well as their outward trips. RailWise
First: Aadhaar-verify your IRCTC account
This is the most important preparation if you may need Tatkal.
Since 1 July 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users can book Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets. IRCTC's own user guide explains that authentication is done through Aadhaar/VID and an OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. IRCTC
This requirement does not mean Aadhaar authentication is compulsory for every ordinary train ticket.
You can still make normal reservations without Aadhaar authentication, subject to the applicable IRCTC rules.
But if your festival travel plan depends on Tatkal, do the Aadhaar authentication before the booking day.
How to authenticate
On the IRCTC website or Rail Connect app:
- Log in to your IRCTC account.
- Open the Account/Profile section.
- Select the Aadhaar authentication option.
- Choose Aadhaar Card/VID.
- Check that your IRCTC name, date of birth and gender match your Aadhaar details.
- Enter your Aadhaar number or Virtual ID.
- Complete the OTP verification sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Confirm that your profile now shows as Aadhaar authenticated.
IRCTC's guide says an authenticated profile is marked with a green tick. IRCTC
Don't wait until 10 AM on Tatkal day to discover that your profile has not been authenticated.
What are the Tatkal timings in 2026?
For e-tickets, Tatkal opens one day before the train's departure from its originating station, not necessarily one day before the date on which you board at an intermediate station.
The current IRCTC Tatkal schedule is:
| Class | Tatkal opening |
|---|---|
| AC classes | 10:00 AM |
| Non-AC classes | 11:00 AM |
IRCTC specifies 10 AM for AC classes including 1A/2A/3A/CC/EC/3E and 11 AM for non-AC classes such as Sleeper, First Class and Second Sitting, subject to Tatkal availability for the particular train/class/location. IRCTC
Example
Suppose your train originates on 10 November.
Tatkal booking for that train opens on:
- 9 November, 10 AM for AC
- 9 November, 11 AM for non-AC
If you board the same train at a station later in its route on 10 November, you don't get a separate Tatkal opening based on your boarding station.
The train's originating-station departure date is what matters. IRCTC
Don't confuse normal booking with Tatkal
Normal reserved tickets and Tatkal tickets follow different booking windows.
Normal reservation
The current ARP is generally 60 days excluding the date of journey, counted from the train's originating station, although certain trains have shorter booking periods. Press Information Bureau
Tatkal
Tatkal opens one day before departure from the originating station, at the specified class-wise time. IRCTC
This distinction matters during Diwali because waiting for Tatkal can mean competing for a much smaller pool of seats after regular reservations have already filled.
When should you book Diwali 2026 travel?
Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. The exact date of your train journey is what determines when normal reservation becomes available.
Don't simply mark 8 November on your calendar and assume that is your booking date.
Instead:
Journey date → count the applicable 60-day ARP → check the train's originating station → book when the reservation window opens.
For example, a journey on a particular date around Diwali will enter the normal reservation window roughly 60 days beforehand, subject to the train-specific rules.
IRCTC also states that opening-day booking is available only after 8 AM. IRCTC
What about Chhath 2026?
The main Chhath Puja day in 2026 is 15 November, with the four-day festival running from 13 to 16 November. Drikpanchang
For railway planning, that means the high-demand period can extend well beyond Diwali.
Passengers travelling towards Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions should therefore consider:
- the journey to their hometown;
- the journey back after Chhath;
- alternative boarding stations;
- alternative trains;
- festival special trains.
A confirmed ticket for the outward journey does not solve the return journey problem.
Indian Railways is adding festival special trains
Indian Railways has announced a large number of additional services for the Durga Puja–Diwali–Chhath travel period.
A recent compilation of Railway Board/zonal announcements listed 1,053 festival special trips across 43 train pairs and 13 railway zones for the 1 October–30 November period in the North Central Railway compilation. The Indian Express
Special trains are not limited to one region.
For example, Central Railway has announced hundreds of special services for the festive season, including additional services connecting Mumbai with destinations such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Latur and northern/eastern corridors. The Indian Express
A Mysuru–Rameswaram weekly special is also scheduled during October and November, with stops including Bengaluru, Salem and Madurai. The Financial Express
The important point is that there is no single nationwide “Diwali special train list.”
Different Railway zones announce services for different corridors.
How to find a festival special for your route
Don't search only for the words “Diwali Special.”
Instead, search your actual:
From station → To station → Journey date
on the official railway booking systems.
Check:
- IRCTC train search;
- RailOne;
- Indian Railways/NTES information;
- your zonal railway announcements;
- station notices;
- railway helpline 139 where applicable.
Railways has also been expanding digital reservation capacity and the RailOne app provides reserved and unreserved ticket booking. Press Information Bureau
A special train may have a different train number, schedule, stopping pattern and coach composition from the regular train on the same route.
Don't assume every special train has the same fare
Festival specials can have different fare structures and quota arrangements depending on the service.
Before paying, check:
- train number;
- class;
- fare;
- reservation availability;
- departure time;
- arrival time;
- stoppages;
- cancellation rules.
Don't compare only the train number or travel time with your regular train.
What if your preferred train is already waitlisted?
Don't immediately give up.
Build a backup list.
Option 1: Check another train
Look for trains departing a few hours earlier or later.
Option 2: Check nearby stations
For example, your preferred origin may be sold out while another major station on the same corridor still has availability.
Option 3: Look for festival specials
Special trains are specifically introduced to handle additional festive demand.
Option 4: Consider a different class
If your budget permits, check AC 3-tier, AC Chair Car, Sleeper or other available classes depending on the route.
Option 5: Keep Tatkal as the final backup
Tatkal can help, but it should not be your only strategy for a high-demand Diwali or Chhath journey.
Prepare your passenger list before booking
Festival booking is not the time to start entering everyone's details from scratch.
IRCTC allows passengers to be maintained in the Master Passenger List.
Before the booking window opens, check:
- passenger name;
- age;
- gender;
- Aadhaar-authenticated passenger status where applicable;
- concession eligibility if any;
- berth preference.
If you intend to book more than 12 tickets in a month, Aadhaar authentication becomes particularly important.
IRCTC says an Aadhaar-authenticated user can book up to 24 tickets in a month, provided at least one passenger on bookings beyond 12 tickets is also Aadhaar authenticated. IRCTC
That can matter for families arranging multiple festival journeys.
Keep your payment method ready
A Tatkal booking can fail simply because payment takes too long.
Before the opening time:
- log in early;
- check your internet connection;
- keep passenger details ready;
- keep your preferred payment method available;
- know the train number and class;
- decide your alternate train beforehand.
IRCTC also offers its eWallet, which allows users to deposit money in advance and use the balance for ticket payments. IRCTC says the facility is intended to save time during payment and reduce dependence on a particular bank's payment availability. IRCTC
Don't share your IRCTC password, OTP, Aadhaar OTP or payment credentials with another person claiming to be able to secure a ticket.
What ID should you carry during the journey?
Booking online doesn't mean you can travel without identification.
The passenger travelling on an e-ticket should carry an accepted original identity document as required under railway rules.
Aadhaar is one commonly used option, but other officially accepted IDs may also be permitted.
The key point is:
The name on the ticket and the identity document should correspond appropriately.
Don't assume that Aadhaar authentication of your IRCTC account eliminates the need to carry ID during the journey.
Don't rely on a screenshot of an old train schedule
Festival schedules change.
A special train may:
- receive additional trips;
- change its departure time;
- receive new stoppages;
- be extended;
- be cancelled;
- have a different originating station.
Before leaving home, check the latest train-running information and platform/coach details. IRCTC itself advises passengers to check the latest running status, platform information and coach position before starting the journey. IRCTC
A smart Diwali–Chhath booking strategy
If you're travelling during the peak period, use this sequence:
Step 1 — Fix the dates
Decide your outward and return dates before booking.
Step 2 — Calculate the normal booking date
Use the current 60-day ARP, excluding the journey date, subject to train-specific rules. Press Information Bureau
Step 3 — Search multiple trains
Don't become dependent on one train number.
Step 4 — Check festival specials
Search the same route again after special services are announced.
Step 5 — Aadhaar-authenticate your IRCTC account
Do this before you need Tatkal.
Step 6 — Prepare Tatkal as backup
Remember:
AC — 10 AM
Non-AC — 11 AM IRCTC
Step 7 — Plan the return separately
Chhath return traffic can be as difficult as the journey to the hometown.
A common mistake: waiting for “special trains” before booking
Festival specials can provide additional capacity, but that doesn't mean you should deliberately leave your regular-ticket booking until the last moment.
A better approach is:
Book a suitable regular train when your reservation window opens.
Then keep monitoring for:
- better timings;
- special trains;
- alternate routes;
- cancellations;
- additional services.
If you later find a better option, follow the applicable cancellation rules rather than travelling with duplicate tickets.
What if you are travelling from Bengaluru?
For passengers starting in Bengaluru, don't limit your search to one destination or one railway zone.
Festival services can connect Bengaluru with different parts of the country through different originating zones.
For example, a South Western Railway special service between Mysuru and Rameswaram during October–November 2026 includes Bengaluru as a route stop, while Central Railway has separately announced Mumbai–Bengaluru AC special services for October–November. The Financial Express
The exact availability for your journey should still be checked using your travel date and station pair.
Five things to do before the Tatkal clock starts

- Check your Aadhaar authentication status.
- Keep your preferred and backup train ready.
At 10 AM
- AC Tatkal opens.
At 11 AM
- Non-AC Tatkal opens.
After booking
- Check the PNR.
- Save the ticket.
- Verify passenger names, train, date, boarding point and destination.
Final checklist for Diwali and Chhath 2026
Before you start booking, make sure you have:
☐ IRCTC account working
☐ Aadhaar authentication completed if you may use Tatkal
☐ Aadhaar-linked mobile working for OTP
☐ Passenger Master List updated
☐ Outward journey date fixed
☐ Return journey date fixed
☐ Regular trains shortlisted
☐ Festival specials checked
☐ Backup train/station identified
☐ Payment method ready
☐ Accepted ID available for travel
☐ Train running status checked before departure
Bottom line
For Diwali and Chhath 2026, don't make Tatkal your first plan.
The better sequence is:
Plan dates → book within the 60-day normal reservation window → monitor festival specials → keep Tatkal as backup.
And if Tatkal may be necessary, Aadhaar-authenticate your IRCTC account now, because IRCTC requires Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal and Premium Tatkal bookings. IRCTC
Remember the two key Tatkal times:
10 AM — AC
11 AM — Non-AC IRCTC
For festival specials, check the latest train-by-train announcements rather than relying on an old list. Indian Railways is adding services across zones for the October–November festive rush, so your best option may appear after your regular train is already waitlisted. The Indian Express
