What is this campaign?

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary launched the Jaanch evam Upchar, Chikitsa Aapke Dwar (testing and treatment, medical care at your doorstep) campaign on 2 September 2026 across all 38 districts. The goal is to screen 6 crore people and build digital health records for them by 30 November 2026.

The thinking behind it is simple. Diseases like diabetes, BP and some cancers don't hurt at first. By the time people feel sick, the damage is often done. Catching them early means cheaper, easier treatment.

What has the drive found so far?

This isn't a small exercise on paper. As per reports, by 30 September 2026, about 1.74 crore people had already been screened. Over 7 lakh were found with high BP and around 6 lakh with diabetes, and in total more than 13 lakh cases of BP, sugar, heart trouble and suspected cancer were picked up.

Think about that for a second. Lakhs of people walking around with high BP or sugar who probably had no idea. Many of them would have found out only after a stroke, kidney problem or heart attack. That's why it's worth the ten minutes, even if you feel completely fine today, 31 October 2026.

With the campaign ending on 30 November 2026, the last few weeks will be crowded. Going early in November 2026 means shorter queues.

Who should get screened?

Everyone in Bihar aged 30 years and above. That includes:

• Men and women who feel perfectly fine

• People already on BP or sugar medicine, so their control can be checked

• Smokers, gutka and khaini users, and people who drink

• Women, for breast and cervical cancer screening

• Older parents at home who rarely go to a doctor

What gets checked?

ConditionHow it's usually screened
DiabetesFinger-prick blood sugar test
High blood pressureBP machine reading
Oral cancerVisual check of the mouth
Breast cancerClinical breast examination by trained staff
Cervical cancerVisual test at a health centre
Heart diseaseBP, sugar and risk questions; ECG where available
Lung and breathing problemsSymptoms check; TB screening if needed
Fatty liverRisk check and referral for further tests

There's also a separate anaemia screening drive running alongside, with a target of 1 crore people.

Where and how do I get screened, step by step?

1. Wait for the home visit or go yourself. ASHA workers and health teams are visiting homes. If nobody's come to your house yet, don't wait.

2. Go to your nearest Ayushman Arogya Mandir, sub-centre, primary health centre or community health centre. Screening camps are also being set up at these places.

3. Carry Aadhaar and your mobile number. Your health record is created digitally, so give the correct number.

4. Get the basic tests done. BP and sugar take a few minutes. Ask for the cancer checks too, especially if you use tobacco.

5. Note your results. Ask the staff to tell you the readings and write them down or take a photo.

6. If something is found, you get referred. You'll be sent to the PHC, CHC, sub-divisional or district hospital for confirmation and treatment.

What happens if I'm found with BP or sugar?

You won't just be told and sent home. The campaign links screening to treatment:

• Free medicines for BP and diabetes at government facilities

• Follow-up checks at the Ayushman Arogya Mandir

• Referral to higher hospitals for cancer, heart or liver problems

• Treatment under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY if you're eligible and need hospital care

If you don't have an Ayushman card yet, check whether you qualify. Our guide: how to check PM-JAY eligibility and get the Ayushman card. If a hospital refuses treatment on your card, here's how to complain on 14555.

Is my health data safe?

The government says the records will be kept digitally and securely so doctors can see your history when you come for treatment. Your health ID can also be linked to an ABHA number if you want. Never share OTPs with anyone claiming to be from the health department over the phone. Real health workers don't ask for bank details.

Why should I bother if I feel fine?

Because that's exactly the point. About one in four adults in India has high BP, and many don't know it. Untreated sugar damages eyes, kidneys and feet slowly. Oral cancer, very common among tobacco users, is easy to treat when caught as a small white or red patch, and very hard later. A ten-minute check now can save lakhs and years later.

Simple habits to follow after your check

Whatever your results, a few things help everyone over 30:

• Walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week

• Cut down on salt, sugar and fried snacks

• Quit tobacco in any form. Ask at the health centre about help to quit

• Get your BP and sugar checked again at least once a year

• If you're on medicine, don't stop it on your own just because you feel better

Real-life examples

Example 1, a farmer in Gaya. Ram Prasad, 52, felt fine. At the Ayushman Arogya Mandir on 4 November 2026, his BP reads 160/100. He's started on free medicine and asked to come back in two weeks.

Example 2, a homemaker in Darbhanga. Sunita, 41, goes with her neighbour for a check. Her breast exam is normal, and her sugar is borderline. The staff tell her to cut sugar and come back in three months.

Example 3, a shopkeeper in Patna. Manoj, 47, chews gutka. The health worker spots a white patch in his mouth and refers him to the district hospital for a closer look. He goes the same week.
